Every day we spend time learning to become writers. We talk about what good writers look like, how they think and concepts of print. We are allowed to draw pictures, write words or do both. The best way to get your child to talk about his/her writing is to ask "Tell me about your writing." Encourage different kinds of writing at home: lists, stories, letters, messages, notes, etc. Please resist the urge to spell the words correctly for your child. I tell them to write the sounds they hear in the word. Right now I'm more concerned about their thinking as opposed to the mechanics. There is plenty of time in years to come to spell words correctly. Right now you want to encourage putting thoughts down on paper. Once you get in the habit of spelling words for your child, your child will be more concerned about the correct spelling as opposed to the content.
This week we will be studying the letter "Tt" as in "turtle on a tightrope." The word wall words are: help, make, away, here, not.
We had fun acting out the poem Dance! We try really hard to dance all the way through Room 115 from 8:10 to 3:10. There will be no poetry notebooks this week. Look for a very special poem next week.

Be sure to check Thursday's homework folder for a very important letter from me about Accelerated Reader. The first time your child will take an Accelerated Reader test will be Tuesday, January 25. If you have any questions about Accelerated Reader, please do not hesitate to ask.
Our 100th day of school will be Wednesday, January 26. We will be doing things the one hundred way all day long. Remember that we will be dressing up as one hundred year old ladies and gentlemen on that day. Be creative!!! We need a few items to help celebrate the 100th day of school. Please let me know if you can bring any of the following items:
- pretzel sticks
- marshmallows
- M&Ms
- Fruit Loops
- Apple Jacks
- Cheerios
- Goldfish crackers
Our community spirit for this month is the Humane Society. A letter went home on Friday detailing the needs of the shelter. We had a visit from a very special dog last week that taught us about safety around dogs. We fell in love with Harvey!!
We are running low on soap. I would appreciate any extra bottles of soap. (We have plenty of hand sanitizer!)
MPS is considering rezoning district wide. Go to the MPS website and check out the proposal. There is also a map of proposed changes on a bulletin board to the left of the office. There will be a community meeting on Tuesday, February 1 at 5:00 at Carr Junior High. (This meeting was originally scheduled for this Thursday.)
