Last week we discussed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and how he changed
America. One of our classmates made the observation that if Dr. King
didn't change the bad laws then our class wouldn't look the way it
looks. What a true observation! I hope you had the chance to discuss
with your child the Let's Find Out Issue highlighting Dr. King that came
home on Wednesday. Room 114 works very hard at being responsible,
trustworthy, careful, helpful and patient. Those are all character
traits that Dr. King possessed. How fortunate we are to live in
America.
We added the popular birthday song to our poetry journal with a special shout out to Dr. King. Some of the students wanted to share how they illustrated the song. Look closely by clicking right here and to see the sweet celebratory images.
This is a short week so send $4.00 for juice and snack. Also, Nancy's Italian Ice will be Tuesday for $1.00.
AR is going very well. This week FIVE students will be recognized over the intercom as being in the five point club. That didn't take long! I expect at least one AR test a week. Thank you for helping your child with AR.
In reading this week we will be working with the letter Kk and Dd. This is a difficult week of high frequency words. The high frequency words are: what, said, was. We will be reading a story about George Washington. Children like to learn about George Washington so be prepared to hear some new facts about the father of our country around the dinner table.
In math, we are working on addition, subtraction and learning the numbers of 11-19. The most important thing about the numbers greater than 10 and less than 20 is the role a group of ten plays in building that number. For example: 12 is a group of ten plus 2 more.
In last Friday's binder was a handout about our January Crafternoon. We hope you can support us in providing a fun afternoon for the children. The Western Round Up will get us in the mood for our field trip in Feburary to see the Giddy Up and Learn concert from Stephen Fite. Thank you supporting our Crafternoons!
Our second poem from last week was meant to be acted it. Lots of smiles and laughter results from watching your classmates pretend to be snowmen and melt because of the sun. Enjoy the Five Little Snowman retelling photos by clicking here to get in on the fun.
Please make sure poetry journals are returned on Tuesday and look for them on Friday afternoon.
Each child will need an empty adult sized shoebox by February 5. You may send it in at any time between now and the fifth.
Don't forget that the 100th day of school is fast approaching. Tuesday will be the 96th day of school. On Monday, January 26, we will do things the hundred way. Your child will come to school dressed as a 100 year old lady or gentleman on the 100th day of school. Refer back to last week's blog entry on links to photos from the past several years if you need inspiration.
Kindergarten is a busy place in the winter. Thank you for staying on top of things to make sure your child has a memorable Kindergarten year. I know we throw a lot of dates and deadlines at you, I appreciate you and your support of Room 114. Contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
