An Upcoming Quiet Week

To celebrate the end of February, we are going to have a full week of learning with no interruptions. I'm so excited.  But wait!  Be sure to keep reading the blog and find out what happens next week.

Kindergarten is hard work.  One of the things I tell the children all the time is that practice makes better.  I love these photos that show the hard work of beginning readers and the joy found in sharing a story with a friend.

Big news in reading this week! I am going to introduce consonant blends to the students this week.  Consonant blends are two consonants right next to each other that make a distinct sound. There will be a consonant blend handout in binders on Monday night.  Please go over it daily with your child.   I will not introduce any new new high frequency word this week.  I will begin assessing for report cards next week.

For comprehension strategies, we are working on sequencing events.  After you read a story. ask your child what happened first in the story, next, then and last.  Sequencing is hard for students so the more you practice the better your child will get.

We begin measurement this week.  Look for February calendar pages to come home on Friday.

Our poem last week was about money.  We have been working on pennies, nickels and dimes to help us count by 1's, 5's, and 10's.  We will still work another week on these three coins before we introduce quarters in March. Grab some pennies, nickels and dimes from home and put them in box.  Just let your child explore the coins.  It is very common to get nickels and dimes mixed up.  Don't panic, just correct and encourage.

Return poetry journals on Monday.

A book order will come home on Tuesday and is due Monday, March 2.  If you are ordering online then use code "GL88R."  You may turn in payment and order form by Monday.  I will be placing the order late Monday night.  Book orders are optional.

Re-posting from last week:  My favorite day of the school year is coming up.  It is Friday, March 6.  The entire school will dress up as a character from a favorite book.  We will have a school-wide  Book Character Parade.  Every child will choose a character from a book to dress up and represent in the parade.  This is not a time to wear your Halloween costume rather it is time to celebrate children's literature.  Families are invited to come and watch the parade.  The parade will start at 1:30 so be sure to arrive early enough to sign in before the parade starts.
We will celebrate children's literature and the power of reading the entire week of March 2nd.  Keep these dates in mind:
March 2:  Bring a favorite book to school because we will have DEAR time where we Drop Everything And Read for 30 minutes.
March 3:  Saddle Up and Read a Good Book:  dress up like cowboys and cowgirls
March 4:  Volunteers can come in and read a book to our class.  Email me the time you want to come in and read.
March 5:  Silly Hat Day:  wear a silly hat in honor of  Dr. Seuss.
March 6:  Character Parade at 1:30.
