We Love Books!

What a special week we had last week celebrating Read Across America.  We finished voting for the Sweet Sixteen books in the March Madness Kindergarten Tournament of Books. Here is how our class voted.  The votes will be counted from all five Kindergarten classes.  The books that made it to the Elite Eight will be announced Monday morning.  Ask your child what book made it to the next round.

Important:  Send in the money you have collected for Jump Rope for Heart on Wednesday.  That gives Coach enough time to count the donations.  The children will participate in Jump Rope for Heart on Friday, March 13 during our specialist time of 8:30.

Mixed Bag orders are due March 11 also.

Monday is Italian Ice for $1.00.

The last day to order a Blount Yearbook is Monday, March 16. Yearbooks are $25.00.  

We were so busy last week in Room 114 that we did not do justice to our poem so poetry journals did NOT go home last Friday.  Look for our poetry journal on Friday, March 13.

What a wonderful feeling to get lost in a good book. I love these photos from last week when we were told to Drop Everything and Read.  Click here for more DEAR time photos.  A wonderful idea is to get your child his/her personal bedside lamp.  After tucking  in your child, allow your child an extra fifteen minutes of quietly reading in bed.  Your child will feel so grown up by being allowed to stay up later.

Not only did we celebrate published authors last week but we also celebrated ourselves.  We are becoming such great authors.  Some of the children wanted to share and others wanted to keep their stories private.  Either way is great!  Check out more photos of Room 114's authors by clicking here.

There will be a new reading information sheet in binders on Monday for the remainder of the year.  In reading, we will be focusing on consonant blends.  Please use the consonant blend handout in the take home binder daily.  Have your child touch each blend, say the blend three times and then the sample word given.  You want your child to automatically be able to look out those blends and say the distinctive sound.  The more your child practices, the better he will get.  Our high frequency words are:  want, eat, new, who.

In math, we are working with 2D shapes.  2D shapes are as flat as a sheet of paper.  The big word that we are going to learn this week is vertex.  A vertex is a corner.  More than one vertex are called vertices.  You will hear your child use that word.  It is the correct mathematical word for corner.

Look for a letter to come home on Wednesday about  our upcoming Spring Egg Hunt.

Thursday and Friday is donuts with dad (or a substitute dad.)  If dad is unable to come on the assigned day then have him come on the other day.
