Welcome Back!

Welcome back!  I hope your Spring Break was full of sweet memories!  Hopefully, you found the handout to the left in the binder and you are getting ready for Thursday.  You may send in the eggs any day this week.  Please make sure to send in 21 eggs.  Label with a permanent marker and underscore the 6 and the 9.  I need volunteers to assist with the egg hunt.  Please contact me if you are able to help.  Start thinking good thoughts for no rain on Thursday.

Monday is Italian Ice for $1.00.  It is a short week for juice and snack so only send $2.00 for each item. 

 There will be no school on Friday because we had a weather make up day that we didn't use this year.  Enjoy your long weekend.

I'm sure many of you were very familiar with our last entry in the poetry journal.  Several students told me that their parents sing that song to them.  Remember singing is an excellent way to strengthen oral language development with your child.  Your child needs opportunities to talk. Singing is so joyful so join in with your child.  Don't give the excuse that you have a horrible singing voice...I can promise you that Kindergarten children think every voice is beautiful.    So just sing...sing a song!  Please make sure to return poetry journals on Monday.

You Are My Sunshine had several of our high frequency words in it.  On Wednesday, I will send home a note explaining your child's high frequency word assessment from the third nine weeks.  You will know what words to focus on to assist your child in learning to read those words accurately upon sight.  I will also send home some extra work to help your child practice the sight words.  Look for that in Wednesday's binder. 

In reading this week we will be working with the letter Ee.  We will learn the long and short sound of the letter Ee.  Be careful some children have a hard time telling the difference between the  short sound of e and the short sound of i.  Just one high frequency word this week and it is ate.  Don't forget to practice the consonant blend handout found in the binder.  You want your child to be so familiar with those blends that as soon as they see the consonant blend they can automatically make the distinctive sound for that bland.  This comes from practice.

In math, we continue to work on shapes, addition and subtraction.  Look for March calendar pages to come home on Tuesday.

Even though we have welcomed Spring there is still a whole lot of learning that will take place in Room 114.  The learning continues right up until the last day of school.  Please help me out by maintaining regular bedtimes  for your child and encouraging appropriate behavior at school.   Thank you for helping me maintain the learning environment for Room 114. 

Remember to send in an excuse within three days of your child's absence from school.  Also, I must be notified in writing of any change in dismissal for your child.  I will not take the word of your child.  Changes must be in writing.

 We ended our March Tournament of Books with the big vote between the nonfiction book of Actual Size and the fiction story of Bark, George for the Book of the Year in Kindergarten.   These photos document the announcement of the winning title, the final results and an outdoor Popsicle party to celebrate the power of reading.  Room 114 is full of children that will be life long comprehending readers.  My goal is for your child to leave Kindergarten with a love of books.  By the excitement found in the photo below I think there is a love there!

 Notice I've added a few important dates to upcoming events.  Pay special attention to Monday, May 18.  We will have a Kindergarten program in the lunchroom for all of Kindergarten at 9:00.  Immediately following the program, we will return to Room 114 and have a special program in our classroom for just our class.  If you need to rearrange your work schedule, you should be able to return to work by 11:00.  The dress code for the May 18 program will be our yellow Kindergarten field trip t-shirt and khaki bottoms (shorts, skort, pants.)
