Friday was the tenth day of school! School days go by quickly. Zero the Hero stopped by our classroom, unfortunately we were not there. He was needed in Australia so he was unable to stay and wait for us. He did leave Room 114 something behind so we wouldn't forget about him. Zero the Hero will be visiting every ten days of school to help us with place value and counting by tens. Some of the members of Room 114 thought they saw something out the window that looked like Zero the Hero but were not quite sure. We will count down the days until we hit day 20 and Zero the Hero returns.
We will have Nancy's Italian Ice on Tuesday of this week for $1.00. We will return to Mondays for Italian Ice next week. Since this is a short week, please send $2.00 for snack and $2.00 for juice if purchasing from school.
To clear up any confusion, lunch money can be paid any day of the week. You can pay weekly, monthly or daily.
Juice/snack/Italian Ice money can only be purchased on Mondays (or Tuesdays if Monday is a holiday.) If your child is absent on Monday, then juice and snack can be paid for on Tuesday. If your child is tardy to school on a Monday, then juice/snack/Italian Ice cannot be purchased. I do allow you to prepay for juice/snack/Italian Ice. I will let you know when your money is getting low. Not all teachers at Blount allow prepaying so check with teachers of other siblings.
You may join us for lunch any day of the week. Our lunch time is 10:40-11:05 AM. You do not need to make reservations. Be sure to sign in at the office. You may wait for us at the office or meet us at the lunchroom. Heads up: You are not allowed to bring commercially prepared food (McDonalds, Chick fil-a) or soda pop into the lunchroom. Sometimes it is hard to see a loved one in the middle of the day and not leave with them. At the end of lunch if tears should fall from your child, please give a quick kiss goodbye and kind words of "Have a fun afternoon." and quickly depart. I promise to take good care of any sad hearts. After working so hard last week, we decided a picnic was in order on the playground. Room 114 is full of such sweet children!
Tuesday we will hit the ground running with the beginning of our reading and math instruction. Look for a reading sheet called "Family Times." On the back you will find your child's homework for the week. I encourage you to do the activities that correlate with the classroom instruction. You will also find a letter about our math instruction. Check that out carefully and begin to use the vocabulary that is listed on the sheet. Don't forget the twenty minutes of reading that is required by MPS. On the back of the reading log, you will find information about the nine week's reading instruction. You will see the alphabet letters and sight words we are working on in class. We will discuss more about the Kindergarten Curriculum at our meeting on Thursday, September 12.
Any sweaters or sweatshirts worn inside the classroom must be a solid navy, white or red. More information about the dress code is found in the Blount handbook. Please label all sweaters and jackets and water bottles.
I encourage all parents to return the Background Check form. You cannot attend field trips or volunteer in the school without an approved background check. If you need another form, please contact me.
Last week our poem was fun to act out. We pulled out the mirrors and looked at the funny faces staring back at us. We also practiced finding one of our sight words (I) and highlighting it in the poem. We also learned EEKK!! EEKK stands for elbow to elbow and knee to knee. We sit this way when working with friends. We practiced and practiced reading both of our poems. Please return poetry journals on Tuesday and check backpacks on Friday for our new poem.
I try very hard to return emails quickly. If you send me an email and have not received a reply within 12 hours, please resend it. I check my school email before school, during rest time (12:00), during my planning period (1:15) and after school. If you need to contact me after school, please use my personal email that I gave you on Meet the Teacher Night.
Book orders come home once a month. September book orders will be in binders on Tuesday. You may order on-line (link to Scholastic is on the right sidebar of the blog) or you may send the order form and a check made payable to Scholastic. Book orders are optional. Orders are due Friday, September 6. Turn around time to receive books is 5-7 days. The books will be sent to the school and I will distribute. If you choose to order on-line, our class activation code is GL88R.
