It is Field Trip Time!

The big news for this week is our first field trip.  We will be spending Friday outside using our five senses to investigate nature at Lanark/Alabama Nature Center in Millbrook.  If you send a lunch from home, please send it in a zip lock bag or a brown bag. Don't forget to write your child's name on it. We cannot keep up with lunchboxes so make sure everything can be thrown away.  We placed the order for field trip t-shirts after the new Kindergarten class was formed.  We are hoping the shirts will be delivered in time for the field trip. 

If you chose the option of  paying upfront for the yearly Kindergarten expenses, payment is due Thursday, October 3. 

Return library books and poetry journals on Monday.  Nancy's Italian Ice is Monday for $1.00.

A popular center last week was the bookmaking center.  Books were written with such enthusiasm!  Since our class loves books, we naturally wanted to hear the books being written.  Here is a slide show of the students who wanted to share their books with the class.  The writers had the option of sharing their books or keeping them private.


Book orders for October will be in binders on Monday.  Book orders are optional.  The deadline to order books is Friday.   If you choose to order on-line, our class code is GL88R.  If you order from more than one book order, you may write one check payable to Scholastic.   Turn around time for the delivery of books is five to seven days.

We began investigating  3 Dimensional shapes in math.   We will be studying spheres, cylinders, cones, and cubes.  We will also be using positional words of above, below, beside, next to , in front of, and behind.  We had great fun figuring out which shapes could stack, roll and slide. 

In reading, we are going to dig deeper into the letter Mm this week.  We are also going to talk about nouns.  We know that a noun is a person, animal, place or thing.  This week, we will focus on nouns for people and animals.  The sight words for the week are:  a, to.  The children get so excited when they find sight words in their reading. 

They love to show me the sight words they find in lunch box notes and other pieces of writing that come from home.  A whole table got excited when the following note was found on a snack bag.  Thanks for continuing the classroom learning at home.  You guys make my job easier.

Payment for Blount Discount Cards is due Wednesday, October 2.  More discount cards are available if you have sold your supply.  Return unsold cards on October 2.  Thank you for supporting our school.

I am a big proponent for playing board/card games.  Those kind of games teach so many skills:  turn-taking, sportsmanship,  patience, logic, endurance and the list goes on.  Last week, I taught the children the card game Blink.  It is marketed as the fastest game in the world. So if you are looking for a game that can be played within two minutes of bedtime, this is the perfect game for your family. Plus, it is excellent for visual discrimination and gives your brain a good workout.  It says for ages 7 and up but it is perfect for the students in Room 114.  You can purchase it at Target or Walmart.
