As I said goodbye to the students on Friday afternoon, the last words spoken to me were "Mrs. McDevitt, I love Miss Spider Crafternoon day!" Nothing beats celebrating books and friendship. Thanks to the parents who supported us from home and those that volunteered in the classroom. Our next Crafternoon will be Friday, November 22 with a Thanksgiving theme. Enjoy the fun and friendship of our classroom!
After six weeks of working on 2D and 3D shapes, it is exciting to focus our mathematical knowledge to number sense. We are working on writing numerals correctly and understanding the numbers 0 to 5. Math homework started last week. Do not let math homework be stressful to your family. It is not a problem if you need an extra night to complete it.
Reading this week will focus on the letter Ss. We will work on initial and final sounds that the letter Ss can make. The reading program uses the word initial instead of beginning in case you wanted to use that word at home in helping your child with reading work. Sight words for the week are: have, is. Look for the Family Times in Monday's binder on activities to help at home. On Tuesdays, I send home a booklet that has sight words and instructional words focusing on the skill of the week.
Our poem last week got us in the mood for this week's field trip to the pumpkin patch. We investigated the cycle of growing a pumpkin. The pumpkin patch will be crowded so please dress your child in our yellow field trip t-shirt on Wednesday. The office will call you to bring the t-shirt to school if your child comes dressed without it. Jeans may be worn with the yellow t-shirt. You do NOT need to send a lunch on Wednesday. The price of the field trip included a chicken finger lunch. Please send a snack to school for your child to enjoy once we return to the school.
Room 114 is fortunate that one of our parents is a Pike Road volunteer fireman. He came to reinforce our knowledge of fire safety. I encourage you to have a fire safety plan for your house, especially a meeting place outside of your house for family members to meet. Thankful for families that love Room 114 and volunteer their time to help us learn.
We celebrated another classmate this week. One of my favorite parts of the week is sitting down with a small group of students and helping them write a page for our special friend. They work so hard and are so thoughtful. I'm excited for you to see the book we write for your child. These books are staying in the classroom library and will be sent home in May.
Monday is library day and Nancy's Italian Ice for $1.00. Return poetry journals.
The fourth and fifth grade students are collecting school supplies for Family Promise as their community spirit project. There is a big yellow barrel outside of the office if your family would like to donate school supplies. Items will be collected through Friday, November 1.
Red Ribbon Week was busy and fun! The personalities certainly came out as we celebrated making healthy choices! I"m very thankful that my days are spent with these fabulous children. Thank you for your support of our classroom. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
