What a busy week we had...removal of naps, report cards, Fall Festival and a special lunch for some very important people to Room 114.
Monday is library day and Nancy's Italian Ice for $1.00. Return poetry journals so that we can get a new one.
We get back to a normal routine with our math and reading instruction. In math, we will begin working with numbers 0 to 5. We will use the words match, pair, larger, fewer and more. Look in Monday's binder for an introductory sheet to our new chapter. Also, I will begin sending home a math sheet that reinforces the day's instruction. It should not take very long to complete at home. If your evening is busy then please do not let this add stress to your family. Complete it the next day and return it at your earliest convenience. For the formation of numerals, refer to the handout I passed out at the cluster meeting for the song we are singing for each number. Last week I began to teach the children some number games. We will play a lot of math games so that your child will leave Room 114 with a strong sense of number.
There will be a new reading information sheet in Monday's binder for the second nine weeks. This week, we will investigate the short sound of the letter a (as in map and cat.) Word wall words will be: have, is. We will also be working hard to recognize the number words: zero, one, two, three, four and five. Look for a Family Times handout in Monday's binder.
Last week was the beginning of our Special Person of the Week. We wrote a book about this very important person. When I shared the completed book on Friday with the students, it quickly became the favorite book in the classroom with a waiting list of who "needed" to read it. The students worked so hard on this book. The books we write will stay in the classroom and will go home at the end of the school year! I love the community of learners that work and play in Room 114.
This week is Red Ribbon Week where we celebrate saying no to drugs! In Room 114, the discussion is kept very simple and not into deep detail. Each day has a theme.
Monday - "We Are Proud to Be Drug Free" classes will make red chains to show they are drug free. Each student will sign his or her link in the chain.
Tuesday - "Sock It to Drugs and Slip Into Good Character" students wear crazy socks and slippers.
Wednesday - "Hats Off to Not Using Drugs" students wear their favorite hat to show they are drug free.
Thursday - "We Are Too Cool to Do Drugs" students will wear their sunglasses to shade out drugs.
Friday - "Team Up Against Drugs" students wear their favorite team's jersey.
Our first Crafternoon is this Friday as we celebrate friendship in a Miss Spider kind of way. Join us at 1:00 to set up the classroom. Thank you for supporting Room 114's learning.
Zero the Hero did not know that last Monday was a teacher in service day. Instead he thought it was the 40th day of school. He was disappointed that the children had the day off. He left us a spider mask to add to our Imagination Station because the eyes looked like zeros. He threw in a couple of extra masks just to make school fun! This is a great time of the year to pick up masks/dress up clothes to add to your toy box. Children love to take on different identities which leads to oral language and oral language leads to strong readers.
