Monday morning every member of Room 115 will get a new box of crayons. Back in August you sent in four boxes of crayons and now they have all been used. The last nine weeks of instruction will be busy and quickly pass. I'm not ready for the end so we will not discuss it in the classroom until Friday, June 8. Then I will mention to the students that summer starts tomorrow.
Not only is Room 115 a busy place inside the classroom but outside too. We took over the hallway the week before spring break. Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who came to encourage us in our work. (Please know how much I appreciate the parental support at school and from your home that you give to me and the children in Room 115. I am very fortunate to be on the receiving end of such support. And that is why summer can't start because things always change with summer and a lot of you move away or move to another grade level!)
Standardized testing will begin April 9 and continue for the entire week. Kindergarten will not test but we will be extra quiet to help the third-fifth graders do their very best. Please be on time next week. The schedules will be frozen and lunch times will be different so please do NOT join us for lunch the week of April 9. The less distractions in the school the better.
To set a tone of success for testing week, each day this week has a special theme. The entire school will be participating.
Monday, April 2: We are going to "shine bright on testing!" Wear your sunglasses with your uniform.
Tuesday: "Good Luck Day!" Wear a green shirt with your jeans as we wish good luck to our testers.
Wednesday: "Sock it to testing!" Wear your pants rolled up with your crazy socks.
Thursday: "Team Up for testing!" Wear your Blount shirt or other favorite team jersey!
Friday: No school - weather make up day!
This week will be a review of word wall words and introduced sounds. Look for a final word wall word list on Wednesday. Remember word wall words need to read instantly and accurately upon sight!
In math, we will continue with addition, subtraction and numbers up to twenty.
Nancy's Italian Ice is $1.00 on Monday.
Monday is library day. AR tests can be taken on any day of the week.
I love to watch children become writers. When a child is writing, he is proving he is a thinker. Encourage your child to write at home (remember don't expect or require correct spelling...use the phrase "write the sounds you hear")!
You can send in eggs for Thursday's egg hunt starting on Monday. For the Spring Egg Hunt, each child will need to bring to school 20 plastic filled eggs. Please do not fill the eggs with chocolate (chocolate will melt during the hunt). With a black sharpie write a number 1-20 on each egg. Each child will be given a certain number to look for during the egg hunt. This allows each child to leave the egg hunt with same number of eggs as his/her classmates. The eggs do not need to be filled with candy. Alternatives to candy might be stickers, cap erasers, little trinkets. If you do use candy, please make sure the candy is wrapped before placing it inside the plastic egg. Once the egg is filled, if it pops open, please attach a piece of tape to the seam so that the contents stay inside the egg.
For the spring egg hunt, I will need about three parents to hide the eggs. I will also need about four or five parents to help lead a group of children (4 or 5) on a scavenger hunt to discover a spring surprise. Volunteers will need to be at the school about 11:20 and should be finished by 12:45. Let me know if you can help me out on Thursday, April 5.
Our last poem was very loud! The poem this week is full of rhymes! Check book bags for poetry journals on Thursday of this week.
Our next field trip will be to the zoo on Wednesday, April 25. There will not be a limit of parents that can attend so all are welcome. Siblings can come too but know that if you bring a sibling you have the role of a parent and not a chaperone for the class.
Classroom needs: wet wipes, paper towels, and cap erasers. Some of our pencil pouches are falling part. I will send home a note on Monday if your child's pencil pouch needs to be replaced.
